Spring in Sydney runs from September to November — and while Sydney's climate is mild enough that deep cleaning feels less urgent than in colder cities, the season brings its own reasons to reset. Pollen season is at its peak, summer humidity is approaching, and the end of a dry winter is a good moment to clean before the house is sealed up under air conditioning for summer.
This checklist is organised by room. Work from the top of each room down, and from the back of the house to the front — that way debris falls to areas you haven't cleaned yet rather than undoing work you've already done.
Before you start: Declutter first. Cleaning around possessions you don't need takes twice as long and delivers half the result. A single pass through each room before you clean — pulling out anything to donate or bin — makes the whole process faster.
🍳 Kitchen
- Deep clean inside the oven — racks, floor, walls, and door glass
- Degrease the rangehood and soak the filter
- Clean inside the fridge and wipe down all shelves and drawers
- Wipe inside all cupboards and drawers — remove everything, wipe, and replace
- Descale the kettle and clean inside the microwave
- Run a cleaning cycle on the dishwasher
- Clean behind and underneath the fridge and oven
- Wipe down splashback, clean between stovetop burners
- Degrease extractor fan if separate from rangehood
- Clean under the sink — check for leaks and wipe cabinet interior
🚿 Bathrooms
- Scrub shower tiles and grout — treat with oxygen bleach if stained
- Descale the showerhead (soak in vinegar for 30 minutes)
- Clean and re-seal silicone around the shower if discoloured
- Deep clean the toilet — under the rim, base, behind the cistern, and seat
- Descale taps and chrome fittings
- Clean the exhaust fan cover (remove and wash)
- Wipe inside the vanity, medicine cabinet, and behind the toilet
- Wash the shower curtain or clean the shower screen
- Check the drain and remove any hair from the trap
🛏 Bedrooms
- Wash all bedding including doonas, pillows, and mattress protector
- Flip or rotate the mattress
- Vacuum the mattress surface
- Wipe inside wardrobes — remove everything and check for mould in back corners
- Dust ceiling fans, light fittings, and the tops of wardrobes
- Clean window sills, tracks, and fly screens

🫧 Laundry
- Run a hot cleaning cycle on the washing machine
- Clean the drum and door seal (check for mould in the rubber seal)
- Clean the lint trap on the dryer
- Wipe down all surfaces and clean behind the machines
- Check hose connections for slow leaks
🪟 Whole-Home Tasks
- Clean all window glass inside (exterior once a year minimum)
- Wash all curtains or wipe down blinds
- Wipe all light switches and power points
- Dust all ceiling fans and light fittings
- Check all exhaust fans — clean covers and blades
- Clean the front door and entry — often touched, rarely cleaned
- Sweep and mop the garage or laundry floor
- Replace any air conditioning filters

- Fly screens: After a dry, dusty winter, fly screens collect significant grime. Remove and wash them before warmer months bring insects.
- Air conditioning filters: Clean or replace before the summer cooling season begins — a dirty filter reduces efficiency and circulates dust.
- Mould check: Before humidity rises in December, check bathroom and laundry for any mould establishing itself. Early treatment is far easier than later remediation.
- Outdoor areas: Hose down balconies, patios, and outdoor furniture after winter pollen and dust buildup.
